Last week, we hosted the Getting Started with TimescaleDB in the Cloud webinar. In case you aren’t familiar, we recently launched Timescale Cloud, the first fully-managed time-series database service that runs on AWS, GCP, and Azure.

This webinar provided a brief overview of what it means to work with time-series data using TimescaleDB and how you can easily launch instances of TimescaleDB in the cloud. We discussed some of the advantages of using Timescale Cloud including:

  • Store and analyze time-series data using TimescaleDB’s advanced time-series analytical functions and automated data management capabilities with SQL
  • Seamlessly scale up, scale down, or even scale out via read replicas or database forks
  • Visualize your data with fully-managed Grafana instances, or connect with any of our compatible third-party viz tools

We also walked through the process of getting started with your first Timescale Cloud service and the optionality we provide. Additionally, we experimented with a real dataset based on New York MTA bus traffic which showcased how you can combine time-series data, geospatial data, and metadata all with SQL.

I am looking to connect TimescaleDB with PowerBI, is this possible?

Yes. You can use PowerBI and other visualization tools with TimescaleDB. Since TimescaleDB is powered by PostgreSQL, you can use the PowerBI PostgreSQL Integration to connect. Also, you can learn about using other visualization tools in our documentation here.

How are database connections secured?

The connections to your TimescaleDB instances are SSL protected, so you can use any SQL interface to connect, and there’s a lot of options of how to set this up depending on the client you have. You can also configure connection pooling. Learn more here.

Can I have access to TimescaleDB from my VPC?

You can create a VPC for your project in Timescale Cloud and you can peer your own VPC with this VPC. This allows you to communicate from within your VPC to the TimescaleDB instance using the cloud private network. Learn more about VPC peering here.

What is the recovery time in a high availability configuration?

When you are using Timescale Cloud Pro Plans for high availability, the recovery time should be minutes to seconds since the standby is already there and it’s been replicating with the master (this is ongoing). So, if there is a failure in the master, we have to switch over the DNS which could take a few seconds, but then you should be back up and running pretty quickly. For the Basic or Dev Plans, your setup has a single master instance available, so the recovery time takes a little bit longer. For more information on HA, click here.
